A Tale of Energy-Saving Success: How Roslyn Transformed Her Energy Habits

Roslyn, a busy working mum from Melbourne, had been dreading her energy bills. Despite her efforts to turn off lights and keep the heating to a moderate level, her utility bills were climbing. Determined to figure out the problem, she rented a Power-Mate from ecoMaster to investigate.  It cost just a mere $15 to rent it for the week.

On a quiet Saturday morning, Roslyn started her energy audit. She plugged the Power-Mate into her living room’s entertainment setup—TV, gaming console, sound system, and all the accessories. The reading shocked her. Even when everything was turned “off,” they were collectively pulling 70 watts of standby power. Over the course of a year, this tiny trickle was costing her nearly $200!

Encouraged by this discovery, she moved on to her kitchen. Her second surprise came when she tested her trusty old fridge. The Power-Mate revealed that the fridge, while still functional, was guzzling an enormous 2.5 kWh per day—double what a modern, energy-efficient fridge would use. It was clear her fridge was past its prime and costing her unnecessary dollars.

Feeling curious, Roslyn decided to test the drinks fridge in the garage, which she’d all but forgotten about. This little fridge, filled with soft drinks and beer, only saw real use during the holidays, but it was running 24/7, all year long. When she plugged in the Power-Mate, the numbers shocked her—this old fridge was consuming 3 kWh per day! That meant it was costing her over $300 a year to keep running, just for the occasional party or Christmas gathering.

Finally, Roslyn tested her portable electric heater. It was drawing a whopping 2,000 watts when running. With the Power-Mate, she calculated the true cost: running the heater for five hours a day was costing her nearly $3 daily, adding up to almost $270 a month in winter; and the worst part – it wasn’t even doing it job!  She was still cold.

Armed with this knowledge, Roslyn sprang into action. She:

  1. Switched off unused devices at the wall to stop standby power drain.
  2. Replaced her old fridge  Roslyn was smart about this – she went to energyrating.gov.au and selected the most energy efficient fridge that suited her family’s needs. This cut her fridge’s daily energy use in half.
  3. Unplugged the drinks fridge in the garage until it was actually needed, saving $300 annually.
  4. Stopped using the electric heater and bought a heated throw to snuggle under

When her next bill arrived, Roslyn saw the difference immediately. She’d saved over $750 that quarter—just by making a few changes. The energy savings paid for the new fridge well within the year and Roslyn was ahead of the game!

The Power-Mate opened my eyes to where my energy was really going,” Roslyn said. “It was a game-changer for me and my family.

Roslyn is now curious about what else she can achieve so she is back to rent the Flir Thermographic Camera from ecoMaster to find out where her home is leaking.
